About Taquillo

Taquillo complex is a protected natural area located in the municipality of La Libertad Costa, in the department of La Libertad.

The zone has the largest extent of deciduous forests, meaning they lose their leaves at some point of the year, which turn to vegetation when they reach the cliffs that overlook the sea.

It is a region with great natural diversity, and one of its rarities is the existence of the Aztec snail, locally known as “jute dye”, because of the milky substance it secretes and can be used as a natural dye. Also noteworthy is the presence of the purple snail, an endangered species.

The most well-known beach in the area is Shalpa, a small natural and virgin paradise, which stands out for its isolation, rocky reefs, and lush vegetation.

Shalpa is an extraordinary beach. There are elevated rock formations that offer beautiful views, while its dark-sand coast contrasts with the rocks that jut out from the shoreline and the sea. In some spots, salt-water pools form, which can be enjoyed at low tide.

The swell is usually calm at this beach. It is not so suitable for surfing, but the right tide and wave direction can create conditions to hop on a board or a SUP and enjoy a nice session in calm waters amid a breathtaking landscape.

If you obtain the corresponding permits from the Ministry of the Environment, you can organize an unforgettable camping trip at the site.

Taquillo is an exceptional place for ecotourism and feeling like you are in a lost world. Because of these same characteristics there are few services in the area, but its proximity to other more developed beaches and to the port of La Libertad, which is only 25 kilometers away, makes it easy to get supplies or return to “civilization”.

Due to its beauty and tranquility, the offering of accommodations in the area has been increasing.

To get there from San Salvador, take the road to the port of La Libertad, then the bypass Camino a Surf City, and continue on the Litoral road heading west; after tunnel one, look for the sign indicating you have arrived at Taquillo, then you can choose to go up to the town on your right, or down to the coast. The latter road is dirt and stone, so you may need a four-wheel-drive vehicle.
