El Tunco

El Tunco beach (a very Salvadoran word for referring to pigs) is the most iconic surf destination in El Salvador.

Its name comes from an immense rock, half-submerged in its beach, which in some remote era suggested the shape of this friendly animal.

Visited weekly by hundreds of local and foreign tourists, the place that in the seventies and eighties was a small hamlet beside a tranquil estuary has become a mandatory pilgrimage point for international surfers and those who seek to immerse themselves in the bohemian, carefree surf culture.

Located just 7 kilometers west of the port of La Libertad, El Tunco is a microcosm where a cosmopolitan atmosphere is felt, fun abounds, and the “chiva” vibe, local slang for something awesome, prevails.

Speaking of surf, El Tunco has its own.

The highest-quality wave is La Bocana. A natural left, rare on a coast of right-hand waves, formed by the rocky bottom at the mouth of the Río Grande. It is a powerful break that holds waves up to 10 feet high (3.5 meters), with thick, heavy lips, long lines, and sometimes tubular sections. Suitable only for advanced and expert surfers, it breaks consistently almost year-round.

On each side of the famous rock, where you can’t help but take a photo, there are two sections that throw much smaller, friendlier waves, perfect for beginners; but on epic days they can also show that surfing in El Salvador is world-class.

If you want to visit El Tunco from San Salvador, take the road to the port of La Libertad, then the bypass Camino a Surf City, and continue west on the Litoral highway to kilometer 43, where you’ll see the entrance marked with this famous spot.
