Chalchuapa: Santa Ana Oeste
About Parque Arqueológico El Tazumal
Explore several Maya structures, including a ballcourt and temples, at the Tazumal Archaeological Park in Chalchuapa.
Tazumal was the site of an important and sophisticated Maya settlement that existed around the years 100 to 1200 A.D. After a long occupation, the site was abandoned around 1200 A.D. and is now a treasure full of history.
Structure 1 is one of the main ones, standing 24 meters tall with 13 construction phases dated between 100 and 800 A.D. The main building is a large rectangular Maya-style structure topped by a temple. It has 13 concentric layers, and the upper levels form, in addition to the pyramid, a ballcourt and a water-drainage system.
One of the most important sculptures found at this site is the Tazumal Stele, measuring 2.65 meters high and 1.16 meters wide.
Among the activities you can do is a guided visit to the Illustrative Museum, which contains an extensive infographic with detailed information about the park’s history and discovery.
Open Monday to Sunday, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
