Lago de Güija
Metapán: Santa Ana Norte
About Lago de Güija
The natural beauty, archaeological finds, and legends of Lake Güija are just some of the attractions that will captivate you.
This lake is shared by El Salvador and Guatemala. On the Salvadoran side are the islands of Teotipa, Tule, and Iguatepec, where numerous pre-Columbian ceramic pieces have been discovered.
The landscape you will see from the small islands in the middle of the lake is an intense green, the result of abundant vegetation, which includes nance, cedar, volador, mahogany, granadillo, rubber tree, and chichipince. It is an ideal habitat for birds such as the quetzal, the cenzontle, and the American robin, as well as numerous lizards and snakes, like boas and vipers, so it is best to always go with guides.
You can also practice bird-watching and hiking in the Área Natural Protegida San Diego La Barra. Other activities to do are rafting, kayaking, sailing, and artisanal fishing on the banks of the Guajoyo River, which is the outflow of the lake. The activities you choose will depend on your interests.
