About Los Cóbanos

Los Cóbanos is a small fishing community on the coast of the western department of Sonsonate, located 11 kilometers east of the municipality and port of Acajutla.

In its surroundings there are several paradisiacal beaches, which, because of their honey-colored sand, coral composition, calm water, and the rock formations that rise along the entire coast, constitute a truly unique place in El Salvador.

The general area of Los Cóbanos is a zone of 264 square kilometers of marine ecosystem under environmental protection, due to its richness and natural diversity.

Surfing has not been very popular in this place, because the surrounding reef forms a kind of breakwater that creates a wide confined water area. However, there are spots such as the nearby Salinitas beach, where channels form between the reefs, creating small but consistent waves, ideal for SUP surfing or paddle-boarding.

Less known are some rock formations, about 800 meters from the shore, which on days of large swells produce waves of the type known as “outer reef,” and can reach up to 10 feet in height (3.5 meters), disappearing when they encounter deeper water after running about 200 meters. These spots can only be accessed by boat and under the guidance of a local guide.

Between November and February the area is ideal for tank diving, as there are dozens of volcanic reefs and some shipwrecks, whose marine life and formations are stunning. There are also coastal zones suitable for snorkeling and kayaking.

This area is famous for blue-water fishing, because a few kilometers offshore there are deep marine trenches where coveted species such as golden fish, sailfish, wahoo, tuna and marlin take refuge and feed. Local boat operators offer their vessels, equipment and expertise to organize a day of fishing that can be unforgettable.

A special attraction is that whale sightings are common in Los Cóbanos, especially of the humpback species. Scientific studies have established that this is a nutrient-rich zone that attracts these huge mammals, which feed and rest in its waters during the months of January and February, before continuing the migration that takes them from Alaska to Ecuador. Locals offer tours to enjoy this unique spectacle.

This tourist destination has experienced huge growth and development, so there is an increasing offering of accommodations, food and other services.

To reach Los Cóbanos from San Salvador, take the Pan-American Highway toward Sonsonate, then turn toward Acajutla, passing the Kilo 5 turnoff; 3 kilometers later you will find the turnoff to Los Cóbanos, which is 7 kilometers away.
