Acajutla
Acajutla: Sonsonate Oeste
About Acajutla
Acajutla is an active municipality and the main industrial seaport of El Salvador. It is located in the western department of Sonsonate.
The beach of Acajutla is situated next to the bustling urban area of this port city, but when it comes to surfing, other nearby beaches and spots should be mentioned.
A notable fact is that this part of the Salvadoran coast faces east, not south like most beaches in the country; this means the area is not as exposed to swells that hit from the southern Pacific Ocean. Therefore, the waves in Acajutla are not as powerful or large, although one should not be complacent, as each locality has its own character. It can even be said that there are still waves to discover in this region.
Next to the industrial pier, heading east, is Las Flores beach, a gentle and friendly right-breaking wave that has become a true magnet for SUP surfers and longboarders. It is important to note that it only works at high tide, as its rocky bottom becomes dangerously exposed at low and medium tides.
Immediately after Las Flores, still to the east, is Punta Negra or Negrei, as locals call it. It is unique for being the only left-breaking point in El Salvador. Its wave can become powerful and rewarding. It works on all tides, but at the lowest tide it tends to close.
To the west of the Acajutla industrial pier there are also beaches where surfing is possible, although they are more suitable for body surfing.
La Bocana is a “beach break” located on the western side of the Acajutla artisanal pier. It breaks both left and right, and its characteristics are speed, short length, tube shape, and abrupt closures.
On days of strong swells, the artisanal pier produces a long, slow, gentle left wave, ideal for riding on a longboard or a SUP; however, one should avoid connecting with the “beach break” to prevent a dangerous closure.
After La Bocana comes La Pilsener beach, another “beach break,” less tubular but always fast and steep. It only breaks at medium tides.
Because it is a port city, the general area of Acajutla has a good level of development and, consequently, many services for visitors. There are numerous hotels, some beachfront, rental houses, as well as restaurants, bars, and other attractions. Connectivity is also good.
To reach Acajutla from San Salvador, take the Pan-American Highway and then the road to Sonsonate. Before entering that city, take the road to Acajutla and continue until the signage indicates you have arrived.
