Barra de Santiago
Jujutla: Ahuachapán Sur
About Barra de Santiago
Regarding the conditions for surfing, the Barra de Santiago is an immense “beach break,” which means that depending on where the sandbanks are located and their shape, waves of various size, speed, and height are generated. Although they are mostly fast waves, breaking to the right and left, with short lines, and occasionally tube-like, they close when they exceed 6 feet (2 meters) in height.
At least one surf school operates here, and other services are offered to tourists, such as boat rides through the estuary and mangroves, bird, crocodile, and caiman watching, and water-skiing.
The El Zapote beach, north of the bar, stands out, where you can swim, practice scuba diving with tanks or freediving, fish from the shore, and sail. Restaurants also operate, offering all kinds of seafood dishes.
To get there from San Salvador, follow the Pan-American Highway. Before entering Sonsonate, take the road toward Acajutla and then the turnoff to the La Hachadura border; shortly after, on your left, you will find the dirt road that leads to the town of Barra de Santiago.
