Parque Natural Puerta del Diablo
About Parque Natural Puerta del Diablo
There are several legends that tell its story; one of them says that during colonial times the property belonged to the Renderos family, from which the name Los Planes de Renderos comes.
The daughter of this family, María de La Paz, was courted by the devil himself, which is why they decided to hunt him down. One night, after having courted the young woman, the demon was pursued and, when he saw himself trapped, he broke the cliff to escape through the middle. Since then it has been known as “La Puerta del Diablo,” because of the curious arch shape formed by the two high rocks that make it up.
Other accounts mention that this place formed at the end of the 18th century, a period in which three meteorological catastrophes occurred on the coast in the years 1772, 1774 and 1781, causing severe storms and floods that created that stone formation. Later, another heavy storm in 1906 caused large landslides, permanently separating the two enormous cliffs. This rocky area has three outcrops known by locals as: “El Chulo,” “El Chulito,” and “El Chulón.”
