Parque Arqueológico San Andrés
About Parque Arqueológico San Andrés
Arce City and San Juan Opico: La Libertad Center
San Andrés is one of the largest pre-hispanic centers in El Salvador. It would have been a regional capital between 600 and 900 A.D. This ancient community covered a total of 200 hectares or more, and consisted of a monumental center surrounded by a broad common residential area.
The site includes an acropolis, which is an elevated plaza with pyramids and residential houses on the upper level. There is also a large plaza on the north side where other pyramids stand, including one shaped like a bell. Most of the structures are open to the public, making your tour more entertaining and filled with beautiful green scenery.
According to researchers, in the surrounding area, small huts housed the farmers who harvested the main crops, such as corn, beans and pipián. All the buildings were constructed of adobe blocks, except two structures that were built with volcanic tuff blocks, locally known as talpetate. The details of the acropolis layout and everything found are displayed in the site museum.
It is believed that San Andrés came to dominate the Zapotitán valley, and some neighboring areas, such as the Las Hamacas valley, now San Salvador.
San Andrés is usually hot, so it is best to wear appropriate clothing and shoes. Do not forget to bring a hat. It is also recommended that you bring your own food, as the site has picnic areas and a small café where you can find water, sodas, hydrating drinks, and snacks.
Open Monday to Sunday, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
