Parque Arqueológico Joya de Cerén

About Parque Arqueológico Joya de Cerén

The Joya de Cerén Archaeological Park is an icon of pre-Hispanic culture that shows you what daily life was like for the Maya. It was declared a World Heritage Site in 1993, and it is called the Pompeii of the Americas, in comparison to the archaeological site in Italy, making it an unmissable destination in El Salvador.

It is unique in El Salvador for having evidence of everyday life of Mesoamerican inhabitants from more than 1,500 years ago, and it also boasts an excellent state of preservation of ancient plants and wildlife.

According to the Ministry of Culture, the village that lived there was buried by the eruption of the Loma Caldera volcano, around 650 C.E. Because of this natural event, the structures and archaeological remains are intact and in good condition. Touring this place full of history is an experience you will not regret.

A fun fact is that the new town of Joya de Cerén, located less than 1 kilometer from the discovered structures, is mostly made up of farmers who use techniques similar to those of the ancient inhabitants, and they offer you their products and clay crafts.

Open Monday through Sunday, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
