About Punta Roca

Punta Roca beach is located on the outskirts of the port city of La Libertad, just a few steps from the services and attractions this rapidly growing town offers.

The wave at Punta Roca, or “La Punta,” as local surfers call it, breaks to the right over a rocky bottom and is considered by experts to be one of the 10 best surf spots in the world. In fact, professional surfers who ride it compare it to the famous Jeffreys Bay wave in South Africa, with the added appeal of warm water, making wetsuits unnecessary.

Because of its power and speed, this wave is suitable for advanced and expert surfers.

From the shore you can see it breaking about 300 meters offshore, creating an endless line, with a wide wall for all kinds of maneuvers and several tubular sections that elicit a shout of excitement.

It is a wave that can be ridden almost year-round, thanks to its consistency. But if you want to experience its epic character, you should visit between March and August, when swells generated by storms in the southern Pacific Ocean reach El Salvador. Capable of handling swells up to 12 feet high (4 m), its best conditions are when the swell is between 4 and 8 feet (1.5 to 2.5 m) and the direction is from the southwest.

Punta Roca works at any tide, but you must be careful of its rocky bottom, especially the formation locals call “mamá roca,” a rock outcrop that protrudes from the water at low tide.

Because of its consistency and wave quality, Punta Roca has hosted numerous international surf events, including a world master and several Latin American circuit competitions, ALAS, and several qualifiers (QS) for the World Tour.

In addition to surfing, you must not miss a visit to the Port of La Libertad, a bustling city with a salty sea scent that offers everything a traveler might need. Accommodations for every budget, restaurants, supermarkets, pharmacies, banks, ATMs, and public transportation. While you’re there, be sure to explore the Mercado del Mar and the artisanal fishing pier. You also shouldn’t miss tasting the typical pupusas salvadoreñas and the varied seafood offerings. If you prefer, you can hire a guide who will take you to the best beaches in the area and share the attractions of this port city.

Getting to Punta Roca is easy: from San Salvador, take the road toward the Port of La Libertad; after traveling 20 kilometers you will reach the port city, which you should cross heading west until you reach a block before the Chilama River bridge, which marks the city limit; once there, turn left and continue about 800 meters to arrive at this fabulous destination.
