About La Libertad

If the beach is your thing, La Libertad is one of the departments you should explore, as you will find different destinations there whether you love surfing or want to relax.

Located in the central zone, its proximity to the capital and its accessibility are some of the reasons why many people come to La Libertad, since in less than an hour you will be tasting fresh seafood, disconnecting from the city’s hustle, and enjoying a beautiful sunset.

This department offers pre-Hispanic ruin areas, colonial buildings, the most fertile agricultural zones, and gorgeous beaches; among the most famous are El Tunco, El Majahual, San Blas, El Sunzal, and San Diego.

Its climate is generally hot because of the nearby coast and low valleys, but you may also experience temperate and even cold weather in some regions.

Some must-see archaeological parks in La Libertad are San Andrés and Joya de Cerén, the latter declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Part of its natural beauty can be experienced at the imposing San Salvador volcano, visited by many for its cool climate, stunning views, restaurants, and cafés.

In the municipality of Antiguo Cuscatlán, bordering San Salvador, you will find a natural oasis at the La Laguna Botanical Garden, located in a volcanic crater that erupted more than 2,200 years ago. This park covers 60 acres, of which 4.5 are dedicated to tourists.

Because of its coasts, archaeological parks, and natural attractions, La Libertad becomes an ideal department for tourism, where visitors can choose from a wide range of hotels, from the most demanding to the simplest, but all with good service. And what about the cuisine? You will find everything from traditional dishes to the most sophisticated, as it hosts many of the best shopping centers and lively areas, such as the Paseo El Carmen de Santa Tecla.
