El Obispo

El Obispo beach is a well-kept secret among local surfers, and a wave only for connoisseurs. It is practically in plain sight to everyone, but few run this wave that uses the pier of Puerto de La Libertad as a starting point and launch, to create a long, fast, steep and tubular line that breaks to the right over a sandy bottom and only an experienced surfer can master.

A good recommendation: if it is your first time surfing it, you should study the wave from the pier platform, calculating the timing between sets, entry and exit points, and defining a strategy to ride it safely and with fun.

During December and January, especially with a bit of north wind, this beast can become tame, fun and forgiving, although it will never stop showing its power.

Since it is located in the heart of the city of La Libertad, the area has dozens of hotels, hostels, rental houses, restaurants, craft-sale stalls, as well as the popular Mercado del Mar gateway to Surf City, where you can buy all kinds of edible marine species. As a destination in full development, it is a connection point for the rest of the country and neighboring beaches, and supermarkets, pharmacies, banks and other basic services will not be lacking for its visitors.

If you prefer, you can visit any of the restaurants that line El Obispo beach, which has been for decades a very popular destination for capital-city tourists, who only need to drive about 30 minutes to get there.

Getting there from San Salvador is easy; take the road to Puerto de La Libertad, and upon arriving at this port city, head toward the nearest beach, which is El Obispo.
