About Suchitoto
Suchitoto, located 47 kilometers from the capital, is a must-see destination during your visit to El Salvador. This colonial city holds an invaluable cultural and historical wealth, which blends with nature and its impressive views, honoring its Nahuatl meaning “place of birds and flowers.”
If it’s history you’re after, this destination hosted the country’s first capital in 1528, and its commercial character is very visible in the area, now turned into a tourist hub surrounded by hostels, restaurants and picturesque cafés that give the feeling of being in the colonial era.
Every corner of Suchitoto boasts a very well-preserved architectural charm. As you walk its cobblestone streets you’ll notice earth-tile roofs, beautiful balconies, quaint houses and doors that will transport you to the past. In addition, you’ll find many cultural centers, galleries, museums, craft shops, community-development spaces, among others.
The diversity of activities Suchitoto offers is so great that it hosts major cultural gatherings such as the International Festival of Art and Culture, held each February; the International Film Festival Suchitoto, held in November; and the Corn Festival, celebrated in August.
This destination has many attractions to visit; one day will be too short to discover its charm, so it’s best to stay overnight and enjoy the traditional nightlife in its boutique restaurants, cafés or bars. As for lodging, you can choose from a hostel to a hotel, according to your budget and requirements.
