Lago Suchitlán
About Lago Suchitlán
Come see the artificial lake of El Salvador!
Just as it reads, Lago Suchitlán is a man-made work created to harness hydraulic energy and provide a source of drinking water. Its creation dates back to 1973-1976 with the construction of the Central Hidroeléctrica Cerrón Grande.
Although it is an artificial river, its contribution is enormous, as its channel produces the largest amount of electric power for El Salvador. However, it also has key tourist aspects for the area. Many come to the lake to fish, ride a boat, or cross it by kayak.
Its name was created by Alejandro Cotto, one of the greatest cultural references of the place, which arose by mixing the initials of Suchitoto and the last letters of Cuscatlán. This artificial beauty is so large that it is located among three departments: Chalatenango, Cuscatlán and Cabañas.
If you want to learn more about the beauties surrounding this lake, board a boat and visit the most beautiful and hidden islands the area has. Among them you can find: Isla Los Pájaros, Isla Los Enamorados, Isla El Chaparral, Isla El Ermitaño, among others. You cannot miss these unique landscapes.
