Cabañas
About Cabañas
Get to know the youngest department in the country, created on February 10, 1873: Cabañas, where you will enjoy many traditions and crafts that showcase the Salvadoran legacy. Its outdoor sites are an invitation to ecotourism lovers.
Among the most notable traditions are the Fogones, held every December 7 from 6:00 p.m. The celebration takes place on the eve of the Virgin of the Conception and consists of gathering leaves and burning them at strategic points.
If we talk about cuisine, Cabañas, with its diverse dishes, will captivate you, as you can taste exquisite typical foods such as pupusas, marquesotes, tamales, raw milk with tortilla, and rigua soaked in freshly milked milk, since the department is known for livestock and dairy production.
Among the natural gems you can visit are Cerro de La Cruz at 921 meters above sea level; Cerro Ocotillo at 1,014 meters above sea level; the Lempa River, which runs about 88 kilometers through this department; the 5 de Noviembre Hydroelectric Dam and the reservoirs of Cerrón Grande.
The fame of its crafts positions them both inside and outside the country, especially its clay figures and items made in the municipality of Ilobasco, a place you must see up close through its pottery workshops. Cinquera is another municipality that will show you how cigars, puro cigarettes, and leather tanning are made. And in Victoria you will discover how palm brooms are produced.
