About Punta Mango
Punta Mango is a legendary beach located in the eastern department of Usulután. Until recently known only to a few fortunate people, it is now on the wish list of any adventurous surfer.
For many years Punta Mango was accessible only by boat, departing from the beaches Las Flores or El Cuco. Today, it can be reached by road.
Others still take an out-board motorboat, speed through the break and glide over the grayish sea, sometimes escorted by playful dolphins, then stop in calm water and enjoy an exciting session at this epic spot.
From here you can also explore nearby points such as El Toro and Bongo, whose waves are equally world-class.
The experience can be preserved for posterity by hiring a local photographer, who for a few dollars will immortalize this wild adventure.
The wave at Punta Mango is one of the most demanding on the entire Salvadoran coast. Reserved for experts only, on its best days this rocky right-hand break generates a powerful, fast, tubular, long-line wave that races down to die in a sandy cove.
On an epic day it can reach up to 12 feet (4 meters), with tubular caves, and its dark-green water adds an element of mystery. However, there are also less aggressive days when even an intermediate-level surfer can enjoy the ride of a lifetime.
Punta Mango breaks year-round, but it usually shows its best moments when waves are too large at other points in the country.
This surf spot was a well-kept secret for many years, and somehow it still retains the isolation that makes it so attractive for its rugged, rural, semi-desert landscape. While the more developed Las Flores and El Cuco are only 15 kilometers away, they offer a full range of lodging, food, supplies, and connectivity.
You can also walk on the deserted beach, enjoy a sunset, or cast a fishing line to catch some of the edible fish species that come to the shore looking for prey on the rocky bottom.
If you consider yourself an adventurous, exploratory surfer who loves adrenaline, you cannot miss riding the waves at Punta Mango.
Getting here from San Salvador is easy: take the Pan-American Highway toward San Vicente, then turn onto El Playón street, join the Litoral road toward San Miguel; upon reaching the El Delirio turnoff, follow the road to El Cuco, then to Las Flores, and continue westward on the dirt road that will take you to your destination.
